Who gets more coaching, Pros or Amateurs?

This is a question I ask a lot of golfers that have never had coaching.

The answer surprises most when I tell them that Professional golfers get much more coaching than amateurs. They believe that a professional golfer must surely have it all worked out and don't need the help.

Many golfers believe that coaching is not worth it and that they can work it out on their own. They continue to try the next tip from YouTube or the commentators on the PGA Tour looking for the "secret". This can and does work for some, but for most, it just leads to more frustration as they tie themselves in knots.

Professional Golfers understand that a good coach will shortcut the trial and error phase of learning new skills substantially. This saves a lot of time and frustration in the long run.

"You can't read the label from inside the jar."

Professional golfers seek professional help as they have learnt that what they think they are doing with their swings and what is actually going on are usually two different things. We can't see ourselves swinging the club, so having someone with a deep knowledge of the golf swing who can watch a player's mechanics and look for areas that need improvement or detect a flaw that may have developed is invaluable.

Another area where a coach is worth their weight in gold is teaching players what to do if they start to struggle mid-round and their emotions start to get out of control. Many times, the wheels fall off during a round, and it is crucial to know what strategies to use to get back on track. The importance of having someone there who knows what to look for when things go wrong and then suggests different strategies to try is important.

In conclusion, every golfer could benefit from having a coach. Whether you're a beginner looking to improve your game or a seasoned regular looking to bust through the frustration, having a golf coach is a great way to improve your game faster.
