The Zoo VS The Jungle

G'day golfers.

It is Thursday evening. You have just wrapped up a 90-minute session on the range, and you feel like you have finally cracked the code. Your last 20 drives flew straight down the middle. You walk off thinking Saturday is going to be a walk in the park. You are finally going to break 90.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon in the clubhouse. You are sitting there staring into your beer, wondering why you even bother. The second you stepped onto the first tee, every bit of form from Thursday vanished into thin air. The old habits returned, you lost three balls, and you shot 98.

The worst part? You have no idea why your practice is making you worse.

THE ZOO VS THE JUNGLE

Let's look at a simple truth about nature: Tigers raised in a zoo cannot survive in the jungle.

In the zoo, the tiger gets fed every day. There are no threats, no territories to defend, and zero struggle. Throw that zoo tiger into the wild jungle where it has to hunt, adapt, and solve problems, and it perishes quickly.

The driving range is the zoo. The golf course is the jungle.

For 30 years, I have watched 95% of golfers train in the zoo and expect to thrive in the jungle. They stand on a flat, perfect mat with zero consequences. They hit 50 drivers in a row to the same open target. If they hit a bad one, they just drag another ball over and try again. No pressure, no wind changes, no rough, and no scorecard.

Then they walk out onto the first tee on Saturday. Suddenly, there is a cold breeze in their face, 20 people watching from the clubhouse patio, out-of-bounds on the left, and a water hazard on the right. Their brain panics because they have never trained for chaos.

THE SCIENCE OF ILLUSIONARY COMPETENCE

Dr. Robert Bjork, a leading researcher in motor learning, calls this "Block Practice." Hitting the same club off the same flat lie over and over creates an Illusion of Competence. You feel like you are improving because your brain gets into a temporary rhythm.

In reality, you are removing the single most important skill in golf: Problem Solving.

Research published in the Journal of Sports Science shows that golfers who use variable, game-like practice—changing clubs, targets, and lies on every single shot—transfer their skills to the course at a 40% higher rate and retain those skills far longer.

Real training looks ugly. It feels frustrating. It forces your brain to adapt, just like adding weight to a barbell at the gym. If you only lift 1-kilo weights, your muscles will never grow. If you only hit flat 7-irons to an open range, your Golf IQ will never adapt to the jungle.

BECOME A JUNGLE SURVIVOR WITH R.E.P.A.R.

Golf is an ever-changing sport played by inconsistent human beings. You don't need a robot swing; you need a system to solve the unique problem in front of you on every shot.

That is why I created the R.E.P.A.R. System:

  • R - Risk Assessment: Identify where the disaster is and pick a target that takes it out of play.

  • E - Environmental Assessment: Factor in the lie, the wind, and the ground firmness to get your true playing distance.

  • P - Plan: Select the right club and execution strategy for your current skill level.

  • A - Act: Step up with a clear trigger, lock into your setup, and commit 100%.

  • R - React & Review: Keep your emotions in check, ask what worked, and learn for the next shot.

STOP TRAINING FOR THE ZOO

Next time you go to the range, stop beating buckets with your driver. Play an imaginary hole. Hit a driver, look where it landed, switch to a 7-iron, aim at a completely different target, and then grab a wedge. Put pressure on yourself. Create consequences.
