Want To Improve Your Golf Swing? Start With This Simple Move
I've seen it time and time again on the golf course, and I've certainly been guilty of it myself: golfers swinging with just their arms. This often leads to bad shots, like coming way inside or outside the ball, and it can be incredibly frustrating. If you're looking to improve your golf swing, I've got a simple drill that focuses on getting your body more involved, which is key to great contact.
The Problem: Swinging with Just Your Arms
Many golfers, myself included at times, tend to swing with just their arms, leading to bad shots like coming way inside or outside. This arm-dominant swing often results in a lack of power and control, making it difficult to hit the ball solidly.
My Go-To Drill: The Basket Drill
To fix this, I use a fantastic drill that helps connect my arms to my body turn. You can use a small basket, a soft ball, a Tour Striker ball, or even just a folded towel.
The Drill: I place a basket (or a soft ball, Tour Striker ball, or even a towel) between my arms, just above my elbows. [00:23]
Initial Practice: I start with very small swings, focusing intently on keeping that basket (or whatever I'm using) firmly between my arms on both the backswing and the through swing. This immediately forces my body to turn, rather than just my arms. If I only use my arms, the basket will simply drop. [00:38]
Body Connection: The goal here is to maintain a "Y" shape between the club and my arms throughout this smaller motion. This "Y" shape is achieved through proper body turn, not just arm movement. [01:23]
Benefits: This drill has been incredibly helpful for me in hitting the ground in the same spot more consistently and promoting a much better body turn in my swing. [01:39]
Progression to a Full Swing
Once I'm comfortable with these small swings and feel that connection, I gradually progress:
Remove the Basket: I remove the basket but try to maintain that same feeling of connection between my arms and body. [01:45]
Gradual Progression: I then gradually progress to bigger swings, eventually moving to a full swing with my feet apart. [02:00]
Maintaining the Feeling: The key is to focus on keeping that feeling of the "basket" between my arms until about hip height on the backswing, through impact, and to a similar point on the follow-through. After that point, I would naturally lose the "basket" as I complete the swing. [02:05]
Consistency: Even good players use this as a daily exercise to maintain their connection and consistency. [01:10]
Full Swing Application: The feeling and shape (the "Y") I achieve in this drill should be present and integrated into my full swing. [02:19]
By incorporating this simple drill into your practice, you'll start to feel the proper connection between your arms and body, leading to a lower golf scores. Give it a try, and you might be surprised at the difference it makes!
