REPAR System: ACT

G'day golfers. I hear it every single week: “Paul, I play so much better when I don't think.”

Every time I hear that, I ask them the same thing: Well, what are you, dead or unconscious? Because unless one of those two is true, you are thinking. I have been coaching for nearly 30 years and I have never seen a golfer who was not thinking over the ball. The problem isn't that you are thinking; it is that you are thinking about the wrong shit at the wrong time.

If you don't know what you were thinking when you hit a good shot, you are just hoping for a miracle. Hope is not a strategy. We need to get you to a point where the thinking is finished before you even walk up to the ball.

THE ACT PHASE: WHERE THE BRAIN STOPS AND THE BODY STARTS

In my R.E.P.A.R. system, the A stands for ACT. This is the moment where you stop problem-solving and start reacting.

The biggest issue I see is golfers trying to solve the problem of the shot while they are standing over it. They are thinking about keeping their head down, or what Bruce at the bar said about their left arm, or whether the wind just picked up.

If you are thinking about technique or environment over the ball, you have already lost. Indecision is a swing killer. You are far better off being 100% decisive with the wrong plan than being indecisive with the right one.

SETUP IS 90% OF THE SHOT

Jack Nicklaus, the greatest of all time, said that setting up is 90% of a good golf shot. I fully agree. The elite players I coach, like Chase Oberle, are pedantic about their setup because they know it gives their swing the best chance to work automatically.

Chase has been with me for 14 years. He has been the best junior in Australia and is heading to Notre Dame on a scholarship. If you watch him, he does all his thinking—the risk assessment, the wind, the plan—behind the ball. Then he has a trigger. He pulls his glove strap tight and slaps it down. That is the moment the thinking stops. From that slap to the moment he hits the ball, the timing is identical every single time.

He isn't born with that. He trained it. He knows that once the glove goes on, the planning is over. If a distraction happens, he doesn't just hit it anyway; he steps back and starts again. That is discipline.

BUILDING REAL EVIDENCE, NOT FALSE CONFIDENCE

Confidence is not a feeling you conjure up by being positive. Real confidence is evidence.

Think about Usain Bolt. He didn't just hope he was fast. He had a mountain of evidence from training that proved he could whoop everyone else. Most golfers go to the range and belt 100 balls without a single routine, then wonder why they feel like a nervous wreck on Saturday morning.

You need to build evidence in training:

  • Define your non-negotiables for your setup.

  • Pick one swing thought that has worked in the past.

  • Find a trigger that says Thinking is done, we are acting now.

If you hit 100 balls at the range without a routine, you aren't practicing golf. You are practicing hitting balls at a range. That is why you are frustrated. You don't have a system to fall back on when things go pear-shaped.

STOP THE INDECISION

Real confidence is knowing that even if you hit a bad shot, you know exactly what you missed in your routine. You put it back in on the next one and get back on track. No shortcuts. No magic drugs. Just a solid system.

The thinking happens behind the ball. The acting happens over it. If you can separate those two, you will start playing the golf you think you should be playing.
