G'day Sportsfan,
How many times have you heard a golfer say, "Man, I wish I'd gotten lessons when I first started!" Or even, "Why didn't I get these lessons sooner?" I
t's because so many of us spend years just hitting balls, trying to figure it out, only to find our game getting worse. That whole "practice makes perfect" thing? Nah, it's just nonsense.
Think about it: Say you're topping every single tee shot. If your brilliant solution is to just hit more balls without knowing why you're topping it, what's gonna happen? You'll just get really, really good at topping it! And I'm pretty sure that's not what you're aiming for.
For me, it's all about practice making progress. And that progress? It depends totally on what you're actually focusing on. If you're just reinforcing bad habits, you'll just become a master of those bad habits. What you really need is a bit of guidance on what to work on first. And that, my friends, is exactly where coaching comes in.
I was super lucky in my early golf days. My parents just got the value of coaching from the get-go. I was an athlete, could pick up most sports pretty easily, but golf?
Golf was a whole different beast. My big problem was trying to hit the ball like a cricketer or a tennis player – trying to scoop it up into the air. It just didn't work. I'd fluke a decent shot maybe three out of ten times, but everyone else was hitting it miles further with the same club. No matter how much I practiced, my scores wouldn't budge; in fact, they just kept getting worse.
So, my folks stepped in and signed me up for lessons with our local pro at Highercombe Golf course, Chris Holiday. In that very first lesson, Chris taught me the absolute game-changer: it's the club that gets the ball in the air. Our job is to hit the ball cleanly and then clip the ground after the ball.
Hitting the ground after the ball?
That's a no-go in pretty much every other sport, but in golf, it's a must. My whole approach was so off, that any more practice on my own would just make things worse.
It took a bit to click – going against 14 years of instinct is tough!
But I stuck with it. And then, BOOM! One 7-iron, flushed perfectly. This thing flew 140 meters, high and soft – easily 50 meters further than any 7-iron I'd ever hit before, even my 'good' ones.
I just stared at Chris, amazed, and he just smiled and said something like, "Yep, that's how it's done. Now you just gotta do it more often."
That was the start. Those weekly lessons, plus my regular practice and Chris's quick little tips in between sessions to keep me on the right track, are the only reason I became the golfer I am today – and could even think about turning pro.
So, how's your game looking?
I've put together my coaching programs to give you that same essential advice, feedback, and training so you to can make "progress" with your game. It means you won't be wasting your precious time hitting balls with no real purpose.
Honestly, it drives me nuts watching golfers on the range, working hard, but doing things that just won't help their game on the course. I wasted so much time doing exactly that early on, and I really wish I hadn't.It's my biggest regret in life.
If you're still not sure wether coaching will make a difference, go ask a mate who's had quality coaching and improved. I guarantee they'll tell you they wish they started sooner.

Stop Blow-Up Holes INSTANTLY (The Pro Secret Amateurs Ignore!)
Tired of your golf scores being STUCK in the 90s, 100s, or just not improving because of those dreaded BLOW-UP HOLES?
You know the ones – where one bad shot from a nightmare lie snowballs into a triple bogey, wrecking your card and your confidence.
What if you could finally escape those tough spots easily and keep your round on track?
In this video, I reveal the #1 MISTAKE most amateur golfers make when they find themselves in deep rough, short-sided, or any "disaster" situation – especially those trying to break 100 or consistently shoot in the 80s. Hint: It’s trying to hit a hero shot straight after a shocker!
I'll share a quick story from 25 years of playing with amateurs, illustrating why this emotional reaction leads to even MORE frustration and higher scores.
Then, I'll reveal the simple mindset LESSON that pros use to "take their medicine" and pivot to a practical, on-course demonstration showing you EXACTLY how to play a smart recovery shot (my "grass bunker" technique) that gets you back in play without the drama.

I just had a fantastic message from Steve that perfectly illustrates how a bit of smarts and a clear plan can absolutely transform your game.
Steve was playing in the 36-hole Tura Beach Classic, a beautiful course with some "diabolically fast" greens," as he put it.
The Story of Steve's Win
Steve attended my first ever Breaking Bad Golf Camp, and it clearly paid off.
He shot an 88 on both days, and on his daily handicap of 13, that translated to a net 75 each day. Those two 75s were enough to win him first place in the Tura Beach Seniors net competition!
This wasn't about hitting every shot perfectly; it was about playing smart and sticking to a strategy.
He mentioned following what we've talked about: picking sensible targets, playing conservatively when needed, hitting the right shots on the greens, and most importantly, switching off between shots.
He played "steady but well enough to beat everybody else," even on a very difficult course. He even faced a brutal 180-meter / 197-yard water carry on the last hole from the Tiger tee!
The Lesson: Patience and a Plan
Here's the takeaway: Patience and good course management trump heroic shots in the long run. You don't need to be a scratch golfer to win; you just need a solid plan and the discipline to stick to it.
Steve's success wasn't a fluke; it was the direct result of applying a structured approach to his game.
His ability to manage the course, make smart decisions, and maintain a focused mindset, even under pressure, highlights exactly what we teach in my Breaking Bad Golf Camps.
This program provides you with the clear, actionable strategies and personalised feedback you need to turn inconsistent rounds into confident, score-lowering performances, just like Steve.
We focus on building a robust mental game and course management skills that are often overlooked but are crucial for consistently breaking 90.

What a fantastic weekend for our last Saturday Social golf!
We finally had some glorious weather, and it was brilliant to see 18 players turn up and have such a great time out on the course. Even better, so many hung around for dinner afterwards, continuing the camaraderie!
Despite only playing with three clubs and a putter, we saw some incredible golf out there. There were birdies, pars, and many of you scored as well as, if not better than, you normally do! It just goes to show how effective playing with limited choices can be – it's a great game format that helps keep your expectations in check and truly fosters creativity. Learning to do new and different things with clubs you wouldn't normally try helps us become better problem solvers, which is exactly what this game requires.
This weekend, we're thrilled to have my four Get Into Golf graduates joining us for the first time in the Saturday Social! It’s exciting for them and a great reminder for all of us about where we started in this wonderful game. As usual, I know you'll show them a friendly, welcoming day.
For this Saturday, we'll be playing a Scramble or Ambrose event in teams of two, three, or four, depending on numbers. Just a quick reminder that the days are getting shorter, so we need to get away on time and play fast golf to ensure all groups finish in daylight.
I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday!
