Your Golf Coach is Missing the Obvious Problem

G'day golfers. I’m going to die on this hill, so I might as well say it straight: 90% of you have absolutely no business getting another swing lesson. I see it every week at the range. I see "Bruce." Bruce has been playing for years. He’s keen as mustard to break 90. He’s just bought the latest $1,000 driver that promised to fix his slice, and he’s watched every YouTube tip from here to Timbuktu. Now, he’s shelling out for swing lessons because he thinks if he could just get that "consistent" motion, he’d finally stop losing six balls a round.

But here’s the kicker—Bruce starts hitting it beautifully on the range, his swing looks like a pro’s, yet his scores don’t budge. He’s still shooting 105.

Why? Because Bruce is looking for the label from inside the jar. He can’t see what’s actually killing his game.

THE FOOTBALL COACH FALLACY

Imagine a football manager who wants to win the premiership but never watches a single game. He stays home on Saturday, then shows up to training on Tuesday and asks the players, "So, what went wrong?" The forwards blame the backs, the backs blame the refs, and nobody has a clue about the big picture.

That is exactly how most golf lessons work. You go to a pro at a driving range and tell them what you think the problem is. "I’m slicing it, Paul." So, the pro fixes the slice on the mat. But the pro never saw you on the 4th hole at Emerald Lakes aiming dead at a flag tucked next to a lake with a 20-knot crosswind.

You didn't need a new swing path; you needed a brain transplant.

THE DOCTOR DOESN’T TAKE ORDERS

If you walked into a doctor's surgery and said, "I’ve Googled my symptoms, I have X, now give me these drugs," the doctor would laugh you out of the room. They run tests. They get a baseline.

As a PGA Member, I’ve stopped being a "servant" who gives you what you want (a prettier swing) and started being a leader who gives you what you need (lower scores).

THE GPS METHOD: TRIANGULATING YOUR TRUTH

When you come to see me for a Play with the Pro experience, I’m your GPS. But a GPS can’t tell you how to get to Sydney if it doesn’t know you’re starting in Pacific Pines.

For the first three holes, I’m just an observer. I’m not coaching; I’m gathering data. I’m looking at the "Gap" between what you think you’re doing and the reality.

  • You think you’re aiming at the flag? You’re aiming 20 metres right into the trees.

  • You think your ball position is "middle"? It’s off your left toe.

  • You think you need to "lift" the ball out of the bunker? No wonder you’re blading it into the next postcode.

LOW-HANGING FRUIT VS. THE LONG GRIND

Strategy is the lowest-hanging fruit in golf. I can drop 5-10 shots off your score today without touching your technique, just by fixing your targets and club selection.

But for the rest? That’s not a "lesson" problem; that’s a training problem.

  • Knowledge is the lesson.

  • Implementation is the training.

You need feedback loops. You need to train in a group because that’s how golf is played—with people watching and your ego on the line.

YOUR NEW REPAR SYSTEM

If you want to stop the bleeding, you need my R.E.P.A.R. system:

  1. Risk

  2. Environment

  3. Plan

  4. Act

  5. Review

Stop chasing "perfect" and start chasing "good enough." Is it closer than when you started? Can you find it? Have you got a swing? Can you progress it? If yes, move on.

STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY

If your local pro won't get on the course with you, find someone who will. Stop being a "Range Legend" and start being a golfer.

Get in touch with me today so I can guide you in the right direction!
