How to Break 90 in Golf: The 100 Metre Scoring Strategy
G'day golfers.
I am out here on the 7th hole at Emerald Lakes, watching groups come through and make this game far harder than it needs to be. If you are stuck shooting in the 90s or 100s and you want a dead simple way to play bogey golf or better, you need to understand the scoring zone.
The concept is brilliant because it strips away all the overthinking and ego. We are simply trying to split the hole in half, and the dividing line is the 100 metre (109 yard) marker.
Here is how you actually break 90 on a par 72 golf course without needing a perfect swing.
GETTING INSIDE THE 100 METRE MARKER
Your first goal on any hole is to get your ball inside that 100 metre (109 yard) marker in regulation.
On a par 3, you get one shot to get inside 100 metres.
On a par 4, you get two shots.
On a par 5, you get three shots.
If you pull that off, give yourself a tick. That is the first half of the equation completed.
LEAVE THE EGO IN THE BAG
Let us look at the 7th hole here at Emerald Lakes as an example. It is a par 4 playing about 380 metres (415 yards).
To get inside the 100 metre mark in two shots, you only need to cover 280 metres (306 yards). When you break the math down like that, it gets you thinking entirely differently about your tee shot. You do not need to pull the driver, swing out of your shoes, and risk blasting it into the trees or the water.
You could hit a couple of smooth 5-irons and easily find yourself 80 metres (87 yards) out, sitting safely in the fairway. This is the difference between playing scoring golf and playing ego golf.
DOWN IN THREE FROM THE SCORING ZONE
Once you have crossed that 100 metre (109 yard) threshold, the second half of the game begins. Your goal from this point is to get the ball in the hole in three shots or less.
Treat it like a short par 3. You have two ways to get it done:
Hit it on the green and take two putts.
Miss the green, chip on, and take one putt.
If you can get inside the 100 in regulation and get down in three after that, you will walk off with a bogey or better on every single hole. You do that for 18 holes, and you are breaking 90.
TRACKING THE RIGHT NUMBERS
If you want to know exactly what is leaking oil in your game, you need to stop tracking meaningless stats and start tracking these four things:
How many shots it took to get inside 100 metres
How many shots it took to get in the hole from there
How many total putts you had
How many penalty shots you took
If you track those numbers, the flaws in your strategy will expose themselves immediately. It is not about hitting it further; it is about managing the course and playing the percentages.
